If you didn’t take advantage of the many open adoptions that happened during October’s Adopt a Dog month, maybe it’s because you’re really a cat person. If that’s true then you won’t want to miss this year’s Whiskers in Wonderland.
Presented by the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, this event will include almost 200 cats, kittens & rabbits ready for adoption from different shelters across New York. How to prepare for your new pet
1) Evaluate what kind of pet you might like to adopt. Would you like an older cat or a kitten? Highly energetic or more calm? Shelter employees can help you determine which type of cat will be best for you.
2) Prepare your home for your new cat’s arrival. What supplies do you need to get? Make sure the basics are in order.
3) Establish where you will take your cat for veterinary care. Having this taken care of ahead of time means you will have more time to focus on your pet when he/she comes home.
Once you bring your new feline friend home, make sure to allow plenty of time for her to adjust. Dr. Yoshida, co-owner of Hudson Animal Hospital in the Upper West Side of New York City, expands on the importance of this: “A newly adopted pet has gone through a huge transition, and they need thoughtful care, especially for the first month to six weeks. Make sure to communicate with your veterinarian to establish a plan of care that includes needed vaccinations, diets, and bonding suggestions.”
